The Class of 1961 included 125 graduates: 64 young men and 61 ladies. Students came from the towns of Arlington, Auburndale, Belmont, Brighton, Concord, Ipswich, Lexington, Newton, Newtonville, Newton Lower Falls, Waltham and Watertown. We even had a n exchange student from Austria. Most of the graduates went on to college and some joined the Armed Forces. In those days, during the Vietnam era, the draft was in effect and many served their country by doing a tour of duty; some eventually made it a career.
Basketball was the talk of town, in 1961. St. Mary’s Boys Basketball Team won the class “L” tournament, which was held at the Boston Garden. St. Mary’s won the tournament at the buzzer with an unbelievable “Hail Mary” shot, past half court, by Joe Driscoll; the Boston Garden went wild!
